I was so looking forward to seeing this film. After watching the trailer, behind the scenes footage and interviews with director Tom Ford and the cast, I knew it’s going to be a very good flick!
As a first time director Tom Ford is truly amazing and incredibly talented! He’s not only the director but he’s also the scriptwriter and the producer! He even financed the film himself. The film was shot in only 21 days! Obviously Tom Ford is multi-talented. He’s more than a great fashion designer!
A SINGLE MAN is a beautiful story just Tom Ford described in a previous media interview. The protagonist is a college professor in the 60s and the story is about how he copes with the death of his gay lover as life goes on. Some people might mistake this film being a gay movie before having a chance to see it. I can tell you right now: it’s a love story, a love story about two people who have been together for 16 years. This love transcends gender, skin color and sexuality.

Colin Firth is absolutely marvelous in the role of George Falconer, the college professor. I do hope that he will win the Oscar this year. Last year Sean Penn won the Oscar for best actor in his portrayal of Harvey Milk; this year it will be a thrill if Colin Firth wins the Oscar for his performance in A SINGLE MAN. That will make two years in a row when the best actor award is given to gay characters portrayed by top-notched actors.
The moral of the story is that life is too short and you never know what’s going to happen next. So you follow your heart, roll with it and get with the program! Don’t even underestimate the little things in life that can bring you joy and happiness. Be good to yourself and those around you. And most importantly live everyday as if it’s your last!
By the way I learn something new about love from the film. In A SINGLE MAN the character Carlo says, “Love is like taking the bus; if you wait for awhile here comes the next one.” There’s definitely some truth to that. I’ve been on the bus and off the bus, and I haven’t found a bus that’s comfortable and suitable for me. So, I guess the bus comes early for most people and my next bus is yet to come!
